Alternating Current Answers

Why they use words "AC","DC&q uot; (Alternating,Direct Current) for current and voltage? Why not using AV or DV?
Q. In electrical engineering, we use the words 'AC' and 'DC' a lot. All of us know that AC stands for alternating current, and DC stands for direct current. But the strange thing is, that we use it before current and voltage. We do not say, AC when we are talking about Alternating Current, or AV when we are talking about Alternating Voltage. Instead we say 'AC current' and 'AC voltage'. This also applys for the DC. I think it is a matter of old literature, but I wonder if any one can give me the correct reason (may be historical) for this. I am an Electrical Engineer. I ask this question seriously. Some people thought that I don't know the difference between voltage and current. This is not the question. The question is, why when we want to… [cont.]

Is the current "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" cast going to record a CD?
Q. I've been searching around for it, and it does not appear to exist (The show with Daniel Radcliffe). I just saw the show, and none of the other recordings seem to stack up. Is there any talk of creating one in the near future?

Where does the electrical current orginate from a stimulus in a "graded potential"?
Q. How are stimili converted into electrical sources and transmitted as ions through a neural membrane?
Asked by Andrei C - Fri Apr 13 08:12:14 2007 - Psychology - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. In a graded potential...the electrical current originates from the dendrite of a neuron. Upon being stimulated, certain receptor protein ion channels on the dendrites are activated and opened. This causes an influx of the specific ion the receptor channel was geared for and depolarization results. The more intense the stimulus...the more ion channels that are opened...the greater the voltage change...and the farther the current flows (current reflects the movement of ions). These ions accumulate very close to the stimulated area. From there the surplus of ions radiates out in all directions, polarizing adjoining membranes.

Why is the French stimulus package more "pro-business" than the current proposed stimulus in the USA?
Q. "The French stimulus plan is split into three parts: 11bn euros to help businesses improve their cashflows; 11bn euros of direct state investment; and 4bn euros of investment by state-owned firms for modernising rail infrastructure, energy and the postal service. The government expects that the stimulus package will produce economic growth of around 1.3%"

A. Man made climate change is a farcical idea forced on to everyone by any means. The powers that be want to kill 70% of the population and enslave the rest. Why do you think DDT was banned? Not because it made people sick (no documented cases) it was banned because it was effective at wiping out disease. Millions have died from disease because it was banned. How to swim out of a "turning current" of a dam?
Q. If you are swimming in a river and the river's current caries you into the dam downstream into the turning current "washing machine effect" which is basically and upside-down whirle pool, how do you get out of the dam??
Asked by Gina P - Wed Jan 28 05:53:53 2009 - Law Enforcement & Police - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Hold your breath if you are pulled under, the current will continue to pull and push you down and then away from the dam and then back again. You can gradually work your way farther from the standing wave and the dam. If you are on the bottom you can swim away from the dam as the water current is moving away from the dam, the wave on top pulls you toward the dam.

A. Yes, commercial airline pilots operating under FAR Part 121 must retire on their 60th birthday. (There's no real reason for it, it's just Government policy.) They can continue to fly as a private pilot, or as a charter pilot flying under FAR Part 135, for as long as they are able to pass a flight physical.

Can AC current "jump" across capacitor?
Q. "Jump" is obviously a misnomer, but if the positive lead on an AC source is applied to a capacitor, will the alternating voltages induce current flow on the other terminal?
Asked by GMCastanza - Tue Oct 20 00:39:10 2009 - Engineering - 3 Answers - Comments

A. A capacitor is essentially two parallel, conductive plates, separated by air or another "dielectric" (electrical insulator). Current does not jump across the plates, but instead flows into the plates causing electrons, or negative charge, to build up on one plate and postive charge to build up on the other plate. When the a.c. voltage reverses, current flows in the opposite direction, causing electrons to flow into the plate that was originally positive, and electrons to flow out of the plate that was originally negative. This reverses the charge on each plate. In this manner, a.c. current flows between the plates and the a.c. source without electrons jumping across the capacitor. When the power switch is intially closed, the… [cont.]

"Sudden and accidental damage from artificially generated electrical current."?
Q. Does anyone know what that means? My first thought is it means power surges. That phrase in my homeowners insurance policy as covered. We had an ice storm last week with power surges and major power outages. The first power surge -- 6 hours before my power went out -- messed up my furnace. I called the insurance company, and the agent said that they had a meeting with the higher-ups Saturday and were told that power surges were not going to be covered. I find that highly suspicious! It does exclude loss to a tube, transistor or similar electronic component, but we're talking a furnace here, not a TV. Any thoughts? UPDATE: Talked with the manager of another branch, and he said the furnace would be covered. Seems the other agent was applying… [cont.]

Q. not sure if i worded this right, but would like to know how to do a progressed chart, how this is basically done and how does doing this help you see or forecast things better than by studying current "Transits" taking place by websites such as astro.com, etc? please describe and explain your views. Thanks for your asnwers!
Asked by * - Wed Feb 25 09:10:03 2009 - Horoscopes - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Ok. A Transit is when a World Planet comes into a Conjunction with one of your Natal Chart Planets or Points. For instance, at this point in time, (25th February 2009), Jupiter is 11 degree Aquarius. If you have for instance Chiron, or the Point of Fortune, or the Moon, 11 degree Aquarius, then a Transit is taking place. Now, a Progressed Chart is acknowledging that the Astrological Wheel keeps moving, and this since the very first minute that you were born. There are several ways of progressing a Chart. But here are two ways. The first way is very simple : you move everything in the Chart by one degree a year. For instance a child of 10 born with the Sun in 7 degree Scorpio, would now have his Progressed Sun in 17 degree Scorpio. If the… [cont.]
