From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In alternating current (AC, also ac) the movement (or flow) of electric charge periodically reverses direction. An electric charge would for instance move forward, then backward, then forward, then backward, over and over again. In direct current (DC), the movement (or flow) of electric charge is only in one direction. Used generically, AC refers to the form in which electricity is delivered to businesses and residences. The usual waveform of an AC power circuit is a sine wave, however in certain applications, different waveforms are used, such as triangular or square waves. Audio and radio signals carried on electrical wires are also examples of alternating current. In these applications, an important goal is often the recovery of information encoded (or modulated) onto the AC signal. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Alternating current? Q. If AC goes back and forth all the time, how does it get around the circuit? Asked by Joseph G - Thu Feb 28 07:28:37 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It goes around in alternating directions. The electrons flow through the whole circuit. As long as they are flowing then they can transfer energy. One thing to note is that the electrons don't have to be able to flow around the whole circuit in AC. If you have a capacitor then electrons will flow in one side and different electrons flow out from the other side. Obviously with DC you'd run out of electrons very quickly but if the current changes direction it will put back all the electrons that it took out. So the current flows with AC and not with DC. Asked by shaun15_2000 - Mon Nov 20 22:09:39 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. 400Hz. It is higher than household (60Hz) so components can be made lighter. Answered by calnickel - Mon Nov 20 23:17:40 2006 why does alternating current constantly change and reverse?
Q. Ive been asked in an assignment to explain why alternating current constantly changes and reverses. Asked by Eleanor - Mon Jun 15 11:12:13 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. To induce a current, coil needs to cut magnetic field lines. To continuously induce current, magnetic field lines need to be cut over and over again. So we spin a magnet so that the magnetic field lines change and move, allowing current to continuously be induced. When the coil cuts a positive magnetic field line, it makes it flow one way (in a positive direction), but when the magnet spins and it cuts a negative magnetic field line, the current will be induced and flow in the other direction. This means that the current is constantly changing and changing direction in which it flows, hence alternating current.
